Orinoco Delta

The Orinoco delta extends over 40.000km2 and 275 river arms lead the water from the Orinoco to the Atlantic. The delta is very rich in wildlife: parrots, toucans, hoatzin birds, piranhas and caimans. The Indian tribe called ãWaraoä meaning ãman with boatä live in this region.

ITINERARY
Day 1:
Pick up in Cd. Guayana (Pto. Ordaz or San Felix) at 09:00. Transport to Piacoa ca. 90 minutes. In the posada in Piacoa you check in and enjoy your lunch. The first trip into the Delta by boat starts around 14:00. You will visit the river arms Tipirua und Piacoa. You will also get to meet a traditional family. Most of the time you«re accompanied by sweetwater dolphins, howler monkeys and many birds. Lots of great photo-opportunities!
Cold drinks on board. You will be back at the posada around 18:00 hours.

Day 2:
After the breakfast you start to discover the Sacoroco river, Tulipane river and the Laguna de Santa Catalina. Depending on the water level you«ll see many beautiful, fine sandy beaches along the way. You«ll enjoy a refreshing swim. Picnic lunch on the way.
Again you«ll have opportunities to photograph king fishers, eagles, sweet water dolphins, medicinal plants and many more.
You get back to the campsite at about 16:30.

Day 3:
In the morning you can try your skills at piranha fishing. During the boat ride down the Guacara river in the Sierra Imataca, there are many toucans, small parrots and during August and September many big ara parrots who enjoy the hobo fruit.
You are back in the posada at 12:30. After lunch you leave the camp around 15:00 and travel to Cd. Guayana.

GETTING THERE AND AWAY
The fastest way to get to Puerto Ordaz from Caracas is by plane, several flights per day

BUS
There are buses leaving from Caracas "Terminal de Oriente" several times a day to Bolivar the journey takes 8 to 12 hours.
Recommended bus lines are : Expressos Caribe, Expressos los LLanos, Expressos San Cristobal, Expressos Occidente

! Please note: If you take a bus in Venezuela, the driver used to turn on the air condition at full power and it can get very cold in the bus down to 7*C (45F). Take warm clothes inside the bus.

AIR
It is 500 meters distance to the west from the international airport in Caracas to the national airport.
At the moment there is one link between Caracas C.Bolivar but there are several flights leaving daily to Puerto Ordaz, (80km from Ciudad Bolivar to the east)

We offer a pick-up service from all airports in Venezuela (including Isla Maragarita). Our driver will wait for your flight at the airport with a sign bearing your name. This is for your security, so you can be sure you are in safe hands, which is particularly important if you arrive late at night. The driver will then transport you and your luggage safely to your hostel/hotel.
