Chirikayen Trekking

The Chirikayen mountain is at 1650m above sea level and is easy to climb in four days. You will cross savannah, rainforests and see small gold or diamond mines. Feel the magical world of flat-top mountains and enjoy the fantastic views from the top. This is a great trip for beginners to get the feel for trekking!

ITINERARY
Day 1:
A 90 min drive from Sta. Elena to the typical indian village of Chirikayen. From here you start a 4.5 hr hike to the foot of the Chirkayen mountain. Chirika means "small parrot" in Indian dialect and yen means "place". Overnight stay in tents, next to a small laguna.

Day 2:
After breakfast it takes 45 minutes to reach the mountain and nearly two hours to hike to the top. Then you cross the mountain which takes another two hours. The campsite will be right next to the abyss from the mountain. You won't forget this view!! The rest of the afternoon is spent exploring the top of Chirikayen and discovering unique plants and taking pictures. Dinner and overnight stay on the top of the mountain in tents.

Day 3:
After breakfast you have to cross the mountain again and you have one last chance to spot orchids or carnivorous plants. You then walk a different way back to Sta. Elena . We walk around five hours, mostly through the GRAN SABANA!! Lunch is on the way. With some luck you get to see anteaters or deer. One group even saw a jaguar!!

GETTING THERE AND AWAY
The fastest way to get to Santa Elena is;
1-- from Caracas to Puerto Ordaz or Ciudad Bolivar by plane and
2-- from there with the bus to Santa Elena.

Air
There are no direct flights from Caracas to Santa Elena.
It is 500 meters distance to the west from the international airport in Caracas to the national airport.
At the moment there is one flight leaving from Caracas to Ciudad Bolivar and there are several flights leaving daily to Puerto Ordaz, (80km from Ciudad Bolivar to the east).

Puerto Ordaz - Santa Elena, small plane, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:00 in the morning.

Ciudad Bolivar - Santa Elena, Charter flight, small plane CESSNA 206, every day leaving between 7:00 and 10;00, 2,5 hour
flight, ( !maximum luggage 10kg+small handbag). You can book all national flights with us.

Bus
There are buses leaving several times a day (terminal de Oriente) to C.Bolivar or Puerto Ordaz where you can get connections to Santa Elena. Some bus lines offer direct buses to Santa Elena, 22 hours.
Caracas to Ciudad Bolivar or Puerto Ordaz, 8 to 12 hours ride
Ciudad Bolivar or Puerto Ordaz to Santa Elena, 9 to 12 hours ride
Recommended bus lines are : Expressos Caribe, Expressos los LLanos, Expressos San Cristobal.

! Please note: If you take a bus in Venezuela, the driver used to turn on the air condition at max and it can get very cold in the bus down to 7ºC (45F). Take warm clothes inside the bus.
